The Wise Novelist

Thank God It’s Frīġedæġ

Love Friday. It’s origin, Frīġedæġ, is an Old English adaptation of an even older German word, and means “Day of Frig.” Its derivation is the association of the Nordic goddess Frigg with the Roman goddess Venus. Friggin’ Venus? Yes please!

It’s no surprise then, that, in my youth, Friday was the first night of the week where I was able to engage in my favorite pursuit. Chasing girls. (I know how superficial that sounds, I’m just telling it like it was. I was a one trick pony, not the fully evolved sensitive male you now see before you). Weekdays were taken up with school and/or working. Friday was that first day of freedom. If I was dating someone, Friday was the first night I got to hang with them. If I was single, it was the first night I could try and remedy my solitude. (Finding Jimmy Moran may be a work of fiction, but there is a kernel of truth to every myth)

In other words, Friday reeked of potential. For pleasure.

It’s Pavlovian.

Shit, I’m actually salivating.

Here I am well into the next Century and that feeling of pleasurable potential always appears on Friday. Without fail.

I’ve channeled that energy into a whole list of other more laudable pursuits, but the wonderful feeling remains. Something good always happens on a Friday.

When I woke up this morning, that positive potential outlook was rewarded with finding The Wise Ass sitting back at #1.

Everything beyond that now is icing on the cake.

So, my fine, five readers, chase your potential for pleasure.

Plan a night out (or in) with your lover (which for some of us means our spouse), your friends or just some fun acquaintances. Engage your pleasure.

You’ve all earned it.

Saturday morning will arrive soon enough. You’ll have your errands to run, chores to do.

Weekend responsibilities.

But tonight forget about all of that. Reward yourself.

Have fun.

Before I get there I have one more work day to deal with.

But first a kitty to cuddle, rounds to make and the dreadmill.

So today, make your Friggin’ Venus Day a great one.

Have a great day Tommy. But don’t get into trouble.. leave that for the young ones who run faster. 😂

  2. You know what they say about us old dudes. We may not be as good as we once were, but we’re as good once, as we ever were.
