Given this is the last long weekend of the summer and its unofficial end (but see the Fall Equinox – https://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/autumnal-equinox.html) I decided to take advantage of the extra day and the nice weather to stock up on Mule provisions for the fall. Now the most important thing after a summer of free range mule mowing on Casa Claire, is to have a good provision of hay for them to munch on throughout the colder months. And that means I needed my dear friend and just north of me neighbor, Tom Connelly, to stop by and drop off a delivery.
Tom Connelly is the hay purveyor of choice among the mystical creatures at Casa Claire.
Now luckily during this time of year, Tommy can drive his truck right down to the barn and then its just a matter of tossing the bales down,
and then me humping them into the barn where I can now stack them against the closest inner wall instead of tucked deep in the storage area in the back. A fine legs, shoulder, back and core workout for both Tommys.
And in short order it was all done.
I also ran out and grabbed some Alfalfa pellets and wood shavings from Murdock’s, placed the alfalfa pellets in the new barn,
and dropped the shavings in the old barn as well.
I placed one of the hay bales in th enew barn, to keep the dining hall stocked.
It’s nice to have the old barn as a storage area, although Claire and Honey still like to retreat to it, using the new barn more as their daily rec center, to hang, catch a meal, scratch their ass and listen to tunes, in the well lit, larger and cross ventilated surroundings. I’m hoping that the colder weather causes them to make the new barn their permanent sleeping quarters. It’s insulated and is where the heaters now hang.
Of course, if they remain more stubborn than me, I know I’ll be hanging new heaters back in the old barn.
Now, speaking of hard workers, while I was out picking up the wood shavings, I made a special trip into the Berthoud Post Office to make amends with Nadean Leverock, my dear friend and trusty Postal Clerk who (along with quite affable, and now retired, Kurt Kessel) has made sure that none of my book shipments traveling all over the US and the world go missing over these past 4 years.
I forgot that Nadean is also a FB friend so when I spotted a recent article whose title alone makes one snicker:
I, of course, reposted it on FB with the snarky comment:
“Maybe they are hiring sloths?”
Now that led to not only a indignant comment by another dear and feisty friend, retired postal worker and a character in WTLLM, Adrienne W Stucki (whose father is a famous American painter and one of his watercolors hangs in Casa Claire – thanks AWS), but also led to an exchange with the more local Nadean (whose name I constantly misspell):
Well, taking that article’s warning very seriously, I knew best that I should immediately make amends, so I drove right over to the Berthoud PO and made things right:
Thank you Nadeen, Kurt and Adrienne (and ex-postal worker and childhood friend – Tommy Kojack, brother of the Moon Security character in WTLLM, Mike Kojack) – for your indomitable efforts in the worst of the elements:
“Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night stays these courageous couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.” Herodotus.
When I returned home, I found that the grans (or the fae) had glammed up my fierce driveway guardian, Henri (he’s French) the Lion.
with crystal earrings, and a ring,
and was thrilled to see that Sherlock and Jasper were being introduced to the Fae over by The Old Man.
All probably having a laugh over glamming Henri.
Today I have some food and veggie prep, some shit shoveling and also I have to see if I can get the water cooler I purchased at a tremendous discount from a novelty shop up and working in the new barn so that I can start making coffee down there as the weather starts to get colder. Stay tuned.
Well, the Amazon Kindle freebie for TWA has run its two months course, so I hope that anyone who really wanted to read it with a 100% discount got their order downloaded. Thank you all for your continuing support.
The rest of you fine, five readers are hopefully spending this wonderful Sunday hanging with your friends and family doing outdoor things like pool and beach swimming and BBQs. Enjoy this weekend with all of the gusto you can muster. Winter can sometimes be long and bleak.
But, not today. It will be beautiful. So I better get at it.
First, some kitties to cuddle and rounds to make.
And no matter what else we all get up to, let us make today a great one.
Enjoy.

Jasper is already a winner, as befits his moniker. Hopefully, he will get after any neighborhood Rams…
