Someday

Never been a planner. A life time of reactions.

I know I needed this first week to come to terms with my retirement decision and make sure I’ve got all of the other distractions off my plate.

Trying to dip my creative toe back into writing.

It was easy when I was writing The Claire Saga.

I tell people this all the time. It wrote itself. Completely channeled it.

Claire’s whispered. Elves typed it.

Not a lie.

But now its time to do it again. Recreate the magic.

And that’s a bit daunting.

Hope Rumpelstiltskin reappears to turn the flax into gold.

Chock full of decent Casa Claire excuses to prevent firing that starters gun – beginning with a Honey Do List that has the tenacity of a tapeworm.

Winter’s coming, so I have to make sure all of the barn, trough and cat house heaters are working properly. Make those necessary repairs/replacements before the snow falls. I’ve seen a number of White Halloweens here in NoCo.

There is nothing worse than when the proverbial boiler goes out on a cold Christmas morning. A regular event on Mosholu Avenue.

Got to give the troughs one last real cleaning. Once the freezing weather arrives, the hoses are put away, so it’s topping off only with buckets of hot water carried from the house.

Got a load of hay coming in this weekend. Enough to get the Mules through the New Year. Humping and stacking is in the cards.

Got to inventory the Mule’s winter coats. I try not to put them on until Thanksgiving, to let their winter coats come in full and natural.

Always mule muffins to shovel and shift by wheelbarrow. Moved a major load last night.

On the writing end . . . .

I have to get my computer fully recovered, because I don’t want to have it crash half way into a new project. Maybe time to invest in a new one.

Same with my printer, which loves to go off line whenever I need it the most. And Lisa won’t read my writing on a screen. Hard copies only.

Lots of easy excuses for a life long member of the Procrastinators Guild.

Funny thing is that I may be one of the last of my close circle of childhood friends – the ones that are sprinkled throughout The Claire Saga – to retire.

I’ve followed them on Social Media as they have taken those international trips, rented RVs and driven cross country, relaxed on sunny beaches or golf courses.

And every time I’ve come across a new posting, I’ve thought to myself, “Someday.”

Which is a safe response.

You see, Someday never appears anywhere on any printed calendar.

I’m sure there’s a poem somewhere in “someday.”

* * * * *

Someday I’m going to take that trip

Going to pack my bags

Going to board that ship

Someday I’m going to visit that friend

Going to say I’m sorry

Going to try and mend

Someday I’m going to pay that debt

Going to show my appreciation

Going to release that regret

Someday is my great excuse

Going to never come

Going to never use.

Truth is, that Someday life is just not me. I could never leave the creatures of Casa Claire.

Better off spending the time trying to catch my dead doppelgänger, EH:

While alive –

The Sun Also Rises (1926) [still my favorite];

The Torrents of Spring (1926);

A Farewell to Arms (1929);

To Have and Have Not (1937);

For Whom The Bell Tolls (1940);

Across The River and into the Trees (1950);

The Old Man and The Sea (1952) [Second Favorite].

Then he snuck in two more from beyond the grave.

Islands in the Stream (1970); and

The Garden of Eden (1986).

So, I need four more to match him, five more to pass him. Maybe I’ll hide that last one with a confidant for some posthumous excitement.

Better stop fucking around. Like with these blogs.

Maybe then “Someday” will appear.

But you fine, five readers pay no attention to this raving pensioner.

You finish your cuppas, get out there and wrap up your Thursday.

The forever magical Friday awaits in the shadows. Always the weekend to set things right.

That’s me standing right behind it, frantically waving you on towards the weekend like the Yankees’ third base coach, who is unfortunately free for off season work after that Canadian team put a stake in them.

So that’s my first Thursday’s musings in this new paradigm.

But no matter what else we get up to, let’s make today a great one.

  1. BTW….I’ve been looking forward to the next book since the last one. Hope that happens for you and me and all your other fans.
