It’s been a busy week for us all but there is no rest for the wicked.
The farrier – Jason Bastemeyer – stops by this morning to give Claire and Honey their monthly Mani-Pedis.

Jason has known Claire longer than I have, as he was her farrier at her last home.
Jason has even met Claire other human friend, Doc Clarence, and helped Doc get Claire’s hoofprint for his wall.

When I adopted Claire, I wanted her transition to be as smooth as possible, and since farrier work can be intrusive, I didn’t want her to have to deal with a complete stranger after to move to Casa Claire.
Jason has also worked on Mr. Rogers before he passed and now handles Honey’s hooves as well.
Jason has been amazing.
He’s also fun to chat with, for a human.
But even with the routine we’ve settled in with over the years, it still requires that I get out there a half hour before he arrives and get the halters on the ladies and tie them off to the nearest fence post – side by side – so when Jason arrives, he moves through the eight hooves with an assembly line precision and efficiency.
I also used this time that Claire and Honey are tied off together to give Honey a good brushing, given that it’s the only time I have full access to her, as I am not going to chase her around to halter her every time I want to brush her. So, she gets a vigorous brushing and a few stolen hugs while Jason works on Claire.
Plus, if I were to just try and halter Honey on non-farrier days, Claire could take it the wrong way and come to her defense, which despite our loving relationship, could end badly for me. And I respect that. Claire is very protective of Honey, who is smaller and because of cataract issues, spends each day, every day in really close proximity to Claire.
As it is, I always halter Claire first and tie her off, which brings Honey to Claire so I can then catch Honey and halter and tie her off.
This is a technique that has taken me years to perfect.
I used to have to play ringolevio and employ Lisa’s assistance to help me round them up.
But before that I have the other mule-related chores to attend to, so I better get a move on.
