When Lisa and I first moved to NoCo, we learned of websites like Nextdoor, and other places where people posted items for sale or free. I didn’t want to buy any furniture that was made of pressed wood and would not last. I wanted to buy items that had served other families, possibly for a few generations, so I could bring that positive mojo into Casa Claire, and add to it.
The above four chairs were one of the first purchases we made to go around an amazingly long and solid dining room table. The older woman only had the four chairs left in one of her deceased family members homes, and as soon as I saw them, I grabbed them and took them home. I had to search and add additional sets of two chairs for either end but none of those sets withstood the stressful acrobatical challenges of the McCaffrey back tilt, or the feral grans, so I have had to replace them a number of times.
These four chairs have proven that they will withstand the Apocalypse. Indeed, there is one for each horseman.
So, when Lisa decided after her recent recovery from Shingles that she wanted a complete set of six pristine chairs to go around our dining room table, I told her fine, but I was keeping the chairs that had served us so loyally.
“Where?” She asked.
“I’ll find a place.” I spit back, thinking she would never find her complete set of replacements.
She immediately found a beautiful set of six very comfortable wooden chairs at Habitat for Humanity on a day they were first placed on the floor at half-price.
“Curses!!!” I shouted, as I removed the faithful four beautiful chairs to my basement lair.
“We can drop them at Habitat,” she countered.
“Never.” I mumbled.
The only protection I could offer the chairs, was to keep them in my basement living room, which in turn, began looking like the location of a 12 step program below some local church.
I was intent in not separating this wonderful set by dropping them off at a discount retail place where they would be picked off one by one by Holiday bargain hunters.
But with the new set now around the table, Lisa was pushing to have her way, and I was running out of options.
So, out of desperation, I decided to look to place the foursome on Nextdoor. I have never done it before, and wasn’t even sure how to go about it.
But an hour later I had the two above photos with the following advertisement.
Now Lisa knew I was playing for time, and agreed to give me until the weekend. I was worried. What if no one saw the ad? What if the right family did not see the ad?
But the Casa Claire gods were smiling on their Druid yesterday, as an hour later I received the following text.
At 3:30 pm, Carly’s husband, a school teacher named Adrian, pulled up in his White Ford 150, and gently loaded the four happy chairs into its bed, along with the seat cushions Lisa sent along as their security blankets, to their new happy home with four loving members – two daughters and two parents – who will share their family experiences for years to come. All that good mojo paying it forward.
The Casa Claire quartet plays on with all of the magic they have absorbed within these walls these past seven years.
But the Chair ad continued to pay dividends, with a second text from a close to Carly, Carla.
Well, its another hump day.
But the stars when I went out to feed Claire and Honey this early morning were amazing.
And right after I took that shot, a shooting star crossed their path top left to
lower right.
But I had already gotten my wish. My chairs were safe and happy.
I have already fed Mittens, who sprang out of the bunker when I stopped out under Jack the Spruce to feed him.
Smokey has spent the last half hour balancing on my extended legs, purring contently.
All is right with the world.
You fine, five readers get your skates on and attack that hill. Wave to Friday at the peak, it will be here before you know it.
I’m actually going to drop Lisa for a per diem work day, and then stop at Walmart for some veggies.
But first my rounds.
And, no matter what else we all get up to, let us make today a great one.
