Sad to learn the news yesterday that Luke and Georgie’s mountain of a dog, Cairo,
joined his long time mate Maeve (yes, the one from The Claire Saga)
on the far side of the veil, when he suddenly passed two days ago in Oz.
I’ve blogged about this mighty dog in the past.
Yesterday, my lovely Aussie DIL, Georgie, called Lisa to share the news. It seems that Cairo had been feeling all of his fourteen years lately, and after going outdoors in their Oz backyard to do his business one last time he collapsed and died. Of course, the Aussie family is devastated. Especially the three girls who considered Cairo a sibling upon whom they doted.
But they have seen a lot of our fur family pass since they each arrived on this plain, so they have developed a preternatural understanding of the process. But they grieve, deeply, as they should. Cairo was their protector.
As with most McCaffrey pets, Cairo handily beat the odd makers which set a Neapolitan Mastiff’s lifespan at 8-10 years.
Blue, who had a bit of a crush on the big guy, has been in a bit of a funk the past couple of days, so I’m sure she already knew the news before Lisa repeated it to us.
Death is always more painful for the living.
Prayers have been offered and Cairo’s candle has been lit,
and will burn for the next few days in his memory (despite my misspelling of Maeve – early hours and foggy brain).
I’m sure he was met on the next energy plain by a diverse crew of McCaffrey fur family, including Maeve, Mr. Rogers, and the most recent traveler across the veil, Jeter. Spaghetti, who is the closest thing McCaffreys have to St. Francis, will no doubt get Cairo bunked in and settled in his new surroundings.
With any luck, Pete Sheridan’s soon to be very famous wingman, Fergus, will stop by to welcome Cairo on behalf of the devout Irish Catholic contingent. McCaffreys like to have all our bases covered.
Vaya con Dios, Cairo. Enjoy your wings, big guy, you’ve earned them.
Well, that news makes this hump day a bit humpier.
But those that remain on this side of the veil still have our respective journeys to complete.
So I better get a move on.
You fine, five readers make your peace with your coffee and then get your skates on. Wave to Friday when you hit the peak, then tuck those arms and bend those knees and slalom.
I’m going to go cuddle the kitties and share the news. They only know Cairo through myth and legend.
Then I’ll share it with the neighborhood creatures on my rounds.
But no matter what else we get up to, let us remember to make today a great one.

Condolences to them. π It hurts so much to lose a fur family member. But Cairo is no doubt kicking up his heels with all that went before him and enjoying unlimited doggie treats!
No doubts re Fergus romping with Cairo, Jeter, Maeve et al. – and no doubt re the promise of St. Francis..ππΏπΆππ
So sorry you lost your long time furry friend.
