A Little Devil in All of Us

Happy Samhain (“Sow-in”), more commonly known as Halloween.

I really tried to stay in bed a little later this morning because I know it’s going to be a long day, but the Beagle Brothers weren’t having it.

So, I got up and fed my feral familiars.

and then lit an intention candle, commemorating, inter alia, having started writing Free R.A.D.I.C.A.L. one year ago today, and seeking whatever help I can get from beyond to make its launch in January a bestselling success.

Then I headed out to Berthoud for the Beagle Brothers’ early morning constitutional.

Now, this being a Saturday, there is no telling how many (if any) trick or treaters we may expect here at Casa Claire. or when they will show up.

So, yesterday, Lisa prepared about fifty candy bags – which would be a lot of trick or treaters for this part of Berthoud – but it’s always better to have extra than running short.

Back in Riverdale, we easily served a thousand kids from all over the Bronx (and even a regular group of Russians from the Mission across Mosholu – they loved coming across Mosholu to pose for photos with the scary animatronics and eat the delicious American candy – ghosts and Glasnost.).

We have to figure out the doorbell situation here because the Beagle Brothers are going to bark like MFs so we may just have to leave the candy outside in a caldron with a note to take only one each or be cursed for multiple generations. Lisa and I will sit out there for stretches just to see what shows up. Maybe I can snap a few photos.

I know the grans are scheduled to stop by, so that will be fun. They’ll be joining other neighbors and their children on the hay ride this evening.

I’m also going to have to lock the gate going to the front property, or the BB will harass everyone that comes by on Beverly. They mean well, just trying to protect my turf here at Casa Claire, but it makes socializing a challenge.

Which may not be a bad thing.

Of course, every zombie they prevent from crossing the property line is a win.

Anyway, before any of that happens, I’ll spend some time alone here in my lair sending psychic feelers across the extremely porous veil to see who is tuning in from the other side. Honoring the ancestors. Maybe call in some favors.

I hope you fine, five readers have a wonderfully spooky and enchanting day planned for you, your family and friends. Remember, today is the one day you can openly be someone else, and no one is going to look twice.

So, get out there and enjoy yourselves. Adults and children alike. Happy Halloween.

And no matter what lands in your trick-or-treat bag, let’s all make today a great one.
