Labor Day Weekend

Fridays are always magical. Full stop.

They are so full of spontaneous potential and promise for something pleasurable and fun to happen, particularly if you work the normal Monday to Friday grind. Friday night is the perfect night to cut loose, to just do it, to say an unexpected “yes,” as there is always Saturday (and Sunday, if needs must) to recover.

The Friday before the Labor Day Weekend in the US is even more magical than others because it carries with it a hint of desperation that comes from anticipating the unofficial end to the Summer Season. Make up for lost time.

It’s been my four decades of professional experience that things get really busy at law firms in the Fall. In New York, the partners all return from the Hamptons after Labor Day. Fall season is where the law firm decision-makers start playing catch-up on their cases after respectfully fucking off all summer long. Associates take the blame for things that haven’t been accomplished between May and August. That usually means that the life of the legal minion goes to hell in a hand basket.

So, I learned to cherish every second of those Labor Day weekends. Beginning on Friday.

Even though I no longer have to answer to others when it comes to my legal life, the Friday before Labor Day still carries with it the vestigial last-call-bell feel to it. Better enjoy that last round before the doors close.

Now, of course, these are all artificial connotations. So let’s connote.

The seven day week is biblically imposed by the scribes that tried to make sense out of their existence.

Derived from a limited human idea that a Creator – omnipotent, all knowing, and all powerful – required a set time – before there was time – to build and stock the earth – and just one day off to rest.

Henry Ford improved on God’s Schedule in 1926, by implementing a five day, 40 hour workweek,

adding that second day of rest, and raising the concept of Friday to new pleasurable heights.

So, for most humans, working those five days gets you paid.

Money sets the stage for pleasure. It allows you the means to socialize with others that you may want to have sex with.

Anecdotally speaking, I’m willing to bet that more people have sex on a Friday than other day.

You see, the name Friday is derived from the Old English word, frīġedæġ, or “Day of Frigg” who was the old Nordic Goddess associated with the Roman Goddess of Venus.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friday#:~:text=The%20English%20name%20Friday%20comes,German%2C%20and%20vrijdag%20in%20Dutch.

And who hasn’t used the word “Friggin'” as a verbal place holder in polite company.

Now, Venus is the Roman deity directly connected with love, sex, beauty, fertility and prosperity. She is also the connection between Frigg and other sensuality based goddesses, like the Greek goddess Aphrodite (appearing above rising out of the ocean foam) and the older Mesopotamian love deity Ishtar.

So, psychologically, Friday is ineluctably connected with money and sex.

A day to get paid and laid.

So, it’s no wonder that I have always placed great stock in this day.

Now, as the precursor to Labor Day weekend, this particular Friday heightens the psychological connection between Labor and Pleasure.

As it honors the social and economic achievements of American workers and the labor movement.

Including the five day work week.

Money and sex. Doesn’t get any more magical than that.

So, my fine, five readers, embrace the innate magic Friday offers and enjoy the last weekend where clothing remains on a less-is-more foundation. Do something really daring tonight. Bacchanalia. Spend some money and have lots of sex. Enjoy this “unofficial” last weekend of the summer.

It’s Friday.

And tomorrow, while you recover from your magical Friday, maybe seek more magic in the pages of The Claire Saga. My merry band of mystical misfits knows how to party. And the only residual hangover you’ll be left with will be emotional.

Did I mention, that these last three days of August are the final days of the Amazon Prime Members’ freebie read for The Wise Ass. In keeping with the Friday mantra, get it while you can.

So, my fine, five readers, take this Friday to launch into this wonderful weekend. Don’t even bother showing up for that walk through at work. No one will notice if you are there or not.

And no matter what pleasure we are all chasing, let us make this Friday a great one.
