Preventing A Sweep

There is a method to my madness of placing a broom over the interior of the new barn main entrance. It is not only connected with faeries and sprites, it keeps negative energy out and positive energy inside.

That is important because I want to make sure that I move heaven and earth to keep Claire and Honey happy and healthy. A little magic never hurts.

So far, so good, as far as brooms go.

However, a broom also can have a negative connotation when it is metaphorically applied by an opposing team to sweep a regular season, playoff or world series, leaving your team winless.

Which brings my most superstitious Celtic self to the most superstitious of American sports.

One of my most important baseball superstitions is that I will not watch the Yankees actually play during important games. I literally leave the room, floor and/or house where the game is on, so that my presence watching them does not negatively impact the outcome. I’m not sure when this superstition took hold. It may have been in 2004, when Boston dramatically overcame that 3 game deficit against the Yankees to win the ALCS pennant. I watched all three of those games cheering Bean town’s inevitable demise, and then the following four disastrous games that ended the Yankees pennant dreams.

In the seasons since, I noticed a pattern that during important games, if I avoided actually watching the Yankees play – instead just regularly checked in on scores or raced into the room when the family cheered and caught a replay – the Yankees performed much better. Indeed, I purposefully did not actually watch any of this season’s playoff games, and instead listened to the muffled sounds from my retreat in my bedroom off in the Tower of Casa Claire, while I tried to read a book. I would occasionally check on the progress of the games and scores on my iPhone. It worked like a charm.

However, when I attempted to continue the streak for this year’s World Series, Lisa, an ardent Yankees fan, told me I was being silly and insisted I sit with her and watch the games live on our new 75″ flat screen. I was hesitant. Indeed, I argued vociferously, if unsuccessfully, that their potential 28th World Series success hung in the balance.

But Lisa played the empty house and Shingles card. She demanded that she not have to suffer alone while watching our Bronx baseball team. I relented.

While watching game one, I thought I may have broken the jinx. The Yankees looked good (not great) right up until the tenth inning, when Mr. Freeman sent that grand slam into the deep seats.

A chill ran down my spine.

I tried to beg off for games two and three. But Lisa was intent on showing me that my superstitions were ridiculous. Turns out they are not.

Last night, Freddie Freeman struck again.

So, tonight I shall incur my wife’s wrath and retreat to the master bedroom in the Tower of Casa Claire with my book and iPhone, and hope for the best. I will be able to tell by the muffled cheering and/or cursing of my lovely wife how the game is progressing. If I hear the New York crowd roar I may pop out for a replay, but scurry right back into the bedroom before game recommences. That is the price I am willing to pay for my Yankees. Let’s hope it is not too late to turn the tide.

But, I figure if the Sox can pull off a 3 game comeback, so can the Yanks. Fingers crossed.

I will light a candle and some incense for the Bombers. Cannot hurt.

I would place a hex on LA but I’m cognizant and averse of the rule of three and quite honestly don’t need that kind of negativity coming back at me. Must stay in the positive lane.

Plus, I wouldn’t want it to get out among the Hollywood set that I single handedly brought their baseball team to its knees. Could be bad for my film aspirations.

No, I will stick with the superstition that has worked in the past and hope for the best.

Judge Judge and the rest of the Yanks on their own merits. Stay tuned.

The broom must not sweep tonight.

But before any of that happens, I must get through another day here at Casa Claire.

First some kitty cuddling and then my rounds.

Then see the brilliant legal motion I have drafted through its final vetting.

You fine, five readers do me a favor and perform whatever superstitious practices you employ to help turn this around for the Yankees. Unless you live in Hollywood, whose residents get a pass.

And whatever else we get up to, let us make today a great one.

Go Yanks.
