I always knew Friday was a magical day, but I never cognitively appreciated its strong connection to the feminine form. I just saw it as the end of a school or work week, and the beginning of a weekend. A time for fun.
But as I look back on my youth, Friday always represented the first open night in any given week for the pursuit of love. So, without me even realizing it, Friday has developed an almost Pavlovian trigger. Always full of promise.
You see, in the Latin based languages, Friday’s derivation is dies Veneris or “day of Venus.” Venus was the Roman adaptation of the Greek goddess Aphrodite, and both are considered the goddess of love. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venus_(mythology)
Europeans get this. Friday is vendredi in French, viernes in Spanish, and venerdi in Italian, all considered Latin based romance languages.
(Is it any surprise that the Irish word for Friday is Dé hAoine – Day of Fast, but I digress)
Indeed, in astrology, Friday is associated with the planet Venus, and bears that planet’s symbol.
Which is also the symbol for female.
Now something closer to our English version of the word – Friday – comes from Old English, frīġedæġ, which has its derivation in the Old Norse Goddess Frigg and/or Freya, Odin’s wife. Frigg/Freya is associated with marriage and motherhood – which I’m confident a lot of Fridays have led to – along with other cool things like prophecy and clairvoyance, which helps keep married men on their toes.
I wonder if Frigg is the source of our slang word Friggin? https://usdictionary.com/definitions/friggin/
Married men seem to use that word a lot.
So, no matter how you parse it, Friday has an indelible connection with love of the feminine form.
Now, given its magical effect on the pursuer, Fridays must correspondingly empower the pursued. Venus and Aphrodite understood and wielded this power. So, you females out there, take stock. If there is any day of the week where you hold absolutely all of the cards in the world of human interrelationships, it’s magical Friday. However – and this bit of honesty may compel me to turn in my Spanky He-Man Women-Haters Club Membership card https://ourgang.fandom.com/wiki/He-Man_Woman-Haters_Club – play your hands wisely because while I cannot opine on the characters of my sapphic competitors for a female’s attention, love is love, most men are driven by more questionable traits. We are far less evolved than our female counterparts. Just saying. Still, in all fairness, we have our uses, especially on a Friday.
Well, on that note, I better go see what Lisa is up to this evening.
But before I get there, I better go cuddle some kitties and make my rounds.
Then avoid the grans while I work in my office.
You fine, five readers, male and female, have that last cup of jo and head out into the world to slip through the workday while considering your Friday night options.
And, with that in mind, let us all make today a great one.
